OF TRUMP

It is difficult to imagine that last year at this time, many of us were busy posting pictures of pumpkins and corn mazes on Facebook, and Tweeting comfortable news on Twitter.  I don't think any of us could have believed that our country would be in such a maelstrom of division, as it is today.  This election year has brought out the worst of all of us, and our emotions are deeply visceral.  Never before have I been more concerned about an election outcome, than this year.  I have found myself addicted to the news, and I anxiously wait for the next bomb to be dropped.
I am an angry that the fundamental issues that we should normally expect to discuss and debate during an election year, have been squashed by what has been nothing less than a side show in a circus.  I want to hear how the candidates will help the homeless, feed our families, and heat our homes.  I want to hear about how they will answer to nations that threaten our freedoms.  I want to hear about their policies and their responses to American concerns; yet, here we are, feeling as if we must don chain-mail to deflect the insults and rhetoric of our opponent's views.

I am a Democrat, always have been, and no one can take away my right to express myself, as I am an American and I'm sure many will not agree with my position, but that is between you and God.  I am female and I vote.  Today I am angry.... And, when I get angry, I write.

OF TRUMP

Eminem, will you rap this?
The whole country is knee-deep in shit.
And, I want to live in a country where the definition of separation,
means distance, and nothing else;
Because we love each other, despite of our hardships or wealth.
Where all men are created equal, includes women, too;
And that we have the right to do with our bodies what we choose.
Prosperity through hard work, is still the American Dream,
And, I believe that our country's ideology can be redeemed.
We should not tolerate power as a means to molest,
nor should women normalize or expect an unwanted caress.
We've come to far, to be reduced and ridiculed;
Our minds should not be dismissed, nor our bodies misused.
Shame on you, who turn a blind eye to repeated incidents,
For you are degrading the victims and mocking the innocent.
Many are defending the actions of one, as a common distraction;
But, if you're jumping on the wagon of this adverse reaction,
You're flaming our flag and disparaging our one nation.
Wake up!  These people are paid, that you see on the news,
To support him and his distorted point of views;
For anyone with one shred of decency,
Would never tolerate his racism, hatred and obscenities.
Some of you must have turned the channel,
during that last, now famous, debate;
Because the world was bombarded with irrelevant babble,
and, most of his answers were to topics that didn't relate.
Our world is changing, and not what it used to be,
We live in real time, and are barraged with rapid technology;
Our country is riddled with problems, this much is true,
But don't we all stand under that flag of red, white and blue?
Because, above all, Democracy should be stressed:
The American Dream remains the same:
Through hard work, we can all reap the same benefits,
But only if we work together, without bigotry or prejudice.
Civil Unions should not be regarded as sin,
Because love is love, where ever one finds it!
And, one should never be judged by the color of their skin;
Old Jim Crow should be buried, gone and dead;
But stands to be resurrected, if he is elected -
and this we should dread!
We need to continue to develop laws that are reflect our times,
And our lives are endangered, if you think otherwise.
For our own safety, background checks for those who want guns,
Is plain common sense, and these we should conduct.
Your rights will still be preserved under the Second Amendment,
You can still hunt and have fun with your guns,
But let's protect each other, and our little ones.
I believe that one must educate themselves on political facts,
Before you make statements from contorted rhetoric.
A Presidential candidate should be experienced,
and should possess a grain of common sense.
Unlike him, she is calm, cool and collected;
She's traveled the world, and is well connected.
Imagine this churl having high tea with the Queen!
Truly, you're not that naive,
to think he's capable of negotiating world peace?
America, now is the time to dig down deep,
Can you really trust a man with nukes, that you can bait with a tweet?
I am a female who votes, and I'm a U.S. veteran,
And, I take offense when our freedom is threatened.
Yet, many continue to praise him for his business brilliance;
And, I don't care if he's worth one cent or millions,
For, if all Americans are held to the same standard,
That our intention is to pay our fair share of tax,
Shouldn't he be held to the same expectation?
Are you excusing this behavior,
because he's famous for giving the axe?
(This guy can't even find Syria on a map).
Yet, weeks have passed, and he still has not provided this information.
A world leader should not represent power through intimidation
Nor, should our immigrants be threatened with relocation.
How many decades have we fought to tear down walls?
Yet, he wants to build another, twice as tall!
Her emails in question, are simply strategies of an election,
And for the record,
there is nothing wrong with striving toward perfection.
Maybe you could take a lesson!
The election draws near, so here's your last chance,
To stand with the woman with stamina and perseverance.
Who is ready to defend the down-trodden and the disabled,
For she has proven she's steady at the helm and more than able.
She has proven she'll fight for the voiceless, and the victims;
She will provide you with facts, and doesn't rely on fiction.
Examine your conscience, and cast an anchor into the blue;
Our nation is bleeding, divided, and there is too much hate;
And it is because of this, I must advocate:
Never, ever believe that he can "make our country great".

Spirits of Halloween

The Sun God has died and is returning to the womb of the "Great Mother".  The transition is powerful, as he begins to grow and prepares for rebirth at Yule.  The "veil" is now the "thinnest".  Enter Ye, Olde Spirits!

To best describe "The Veil" as it pertains to All Hallow's Eve, would be an invisible world, shrouded in mist and mystery, from which the Dead exist or remain.  The Dead are more restless than ever, on this day as they have lingered between Heaven and Earth in a Spirit realm, awaiting this night; and, tonight, the veil is the weakest.  This will allow the spirits to pierce the mists and mingle with us, on our mortal plains.  At this time, there is no separation between these two worlds, and it is believed that the Dead wander freely among us.

According to our ancient and pagan ancestors, the veil is the thinnest today, between the living and the dead.  Fairies and spirits arose from earthen mounds and it was believed that tricks were played on the living.  To allow entry and departure of those spirits, windows and doors were left open all night so that the dead could return to their respective realm(s).

Tonight, don't forget to open all of your doors and windows, a little before and after midnight, lest a spirit may remain.

After tonight is over, many of us may feel a sense of nostalgia, as we enter the winter months. Perhaps it is the build-up and the festive nature Halloween, itself, for which many have planned costumes and events.  Once this night is over, we begin to reflect back to the previous summer months and the carefree feeling that is connected to that season.

Here in Vermont, our farms are harvested and rows of severed cornstalks are all that remain in our fields.  Hay has been bailed and stocked in the barns.  Pumpkins, mums and bright leaves are abundant; and,  their bright colors are a gentle reminder of the proverbial calm before the storm, as winter is imminent.

We begin to plan for Thanksgiving and our respective families somehow seem dearer.  We remember those who have gone before us, and a certain sadness creeps into our hearts.  But alas! we trudge forth, as humility and faith replaces those feelings.

We begin to dig out our mittens, scarves and hats....our winter coats and boots.  We locate the ice scrapers, brooms and shovels.  Last year's left-over bucket of salt is dug out of our garage and put near our front doors. Usually after the first snow fall, it dawns on us that we need to have our winter tires put on our cars and service stations suffer and influx of those, like me, who put this off until the inevitable occurs.

A bit of Folklore....

"The Celts believed that many trees were inhabited by spirits or had spirits of their own. From this ancient respect for the power of trees came the expressions 'touch wood' and 'knock on wood' "

THE VEIL

The veil shifts, and from the gossamer mists,

Spirits wake, to wander from the Underworld.

Pumpkins rise from their summer graves,

Among the bittersweet, bedeviled tendrils.

And vines of sour grapes are crushed to wine,

Strained sweet to sip from silver vessels.

The trees dismiss sanguine fruit and leaves.

The scent of Autumn fills our senses;

Seasons shift to bleed their yearly menses.

Blood red bleeds from the leaves of trees.

In admiration, we watch as they fall and swirl,

Summer's warm breeze and daylight fades,

Crows gather in murder, like shadowy thieves;

Silently perched, as if a Great Observer.

Since the dawn of all creation,

The spirits return from the fires that burn,

or slip through clouds and precipitation.

Happy Birthday, Vermont DeadLine!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!

Vermont DeadLine
is celebrating 1 year online!

My, my how time has flown! Yesterday, I realized that I began this website in September of last year.

To anyone and everyone who has read this blog, I thank you dearly and hope that you have enjoyed this blog's content!

An Embarrassing Confession:

I want to tell you the truth - that just now - just this morning - I discovered the many comments that have been left - my apologies for not responding.  To tell you the truth, I disallowed the email notifications and had absolutely no idea that I had so many responses, and just learned that I can view them in the layout section of Blogger!

I will be posting some of these comments, because the content is amazing.  Again, my humble most apologies for not responding - I never even noticed them until today!  I will be returning messages over the weekend.

Personally, it has been an amazing year!  Russ and I were married on May 31st and, later in the summer I changed jobs - something I had not planned - and ended up a State employee!

My very first post was a huge endeavor of typing out epitaphs that I had personally collected from various locations around Vermont, and then posting a picture between every epitaph!  I can't help but mention that the coolest, most obscure and interesting "last words" were found on back roads in the hills of Orange County.

As you know, the focus of this blog has been the dark, mysterious and the obscure stories that are based on either fact, folklore or legend.  I have had a blast collecting what I call "blog fodder", and still am seeking more stories, tales and photographs from the "dark side" of our Green Mountains.

I am also interested in gaining "legal entry" into any abandoned houses, buildings or places that you may know of, for the purpose of photographing its interior and contents.  Please contact me if you know of any!  Please contact me!

vermontdeadline@gmail.com

Remember, October is right around the corner, so I will be focusing on Halloween (Samhain) and all that it is creepy, scary and mysterious!

If you are seeking specific content on this blog, please scroll down to the bottom of the page, and you can view all of the labels that have thus far been posted.

Again, thank you all for reading Vermont DeadLine!

Brightest Blessings

Visit often

Stay long,

With Love and Light Darkness,

Lover's Eyes

These incredibly detailed portrait miniatures, which show only they eye of the "sitter" (the person who would give the portrait to a secret lover, perhaps) were intensely popular for a very brief time from around 1790 to 1830.  Lover's Eyes were often created as a token for unsanctioned love, considered very intimate and yet quite mysterious, were delicately rendered on ivory or copper.  They were statements of wealth, as you can see, set in various jewels symbolizing marriage, death, infidelity, remembrance, devotion or a secret promise.

Most of the miniature portraits that survive today are unknown, adding more mystery for the collector.  The "feverish mania" for these objects were stopped being produced as quickly as they came into fashion, but what is left is how the Lover's Eyes began its popularity in the first place.  salon.com explains the portrait's scandalous origin and popularity:

"According to lore, the story of lover’s eyes goes back to the end of the 18th century, when the prince of Wales — who later became George IV — became smitten with a twice-widowed Catholic woman named Maria Fitzherbert. He courted Maria Fitzherbert rather unsuccessfully at first; he kept trying to win her affection and profess his undying love to her, and she wasn't really going to have any of that. Finally, he staged a kind of half-hearted suicide attempt (I think it was more of a cry for help than an earnest effort to take his own life) — and then she reluctantly agreed to marry him.

But shortly thereafter — I think really the next day — she came to her senses and realized what exactly she had done by consenting to marry the prince of Wales, which of course was totally illegal according to the laws (first of all, the king had to consent to the marriage of the heir to the throne, and second, he would never have consented for the prince to marry a Catholic, let alone a twice-widowed Catholic six years his senior).

So Fitzherbert fled to the Continent, trying to escape George’s attention, but he didn’t give up. On Nov. 3, 1785, the prince wrote to Mrs. Fitzherbert with a second proposal of marriage. Instead of sending an engagement ring, as we might expect today, he sent her a picture of his own eye, set in a locket, painted by the miniaturist Richard Cosway, one of the celebrated artists of the day. At the time, they referred to these pieces as “eye miniatures”; today we call them “lover’s eyes,” but that wasn’t a period term — that’s a term coined by the New York-based jeweler Edith Weber, who’s handled a lot of these over the years.

Anyway, George sent a note with this eye miniature, and it said: “P.S. I send you a parcel, and I send you at the same time an eye. If you have not totally forgotten the whole countenance, I think the likeness will strike you.” It’s not known whether it was the letter or the eye that changed Mrs. Fitzherbert’s feelings precisely, but shortly after that, she returned to England and married the prince in a secret ceremony on Dec. 15, 1785. Soon, the fad for these eye miniatures began to catch on — so this episode is, according to legend, the genesis of the eye miniature.

There is some evidence to suggest that these had appeared in France a few years earlier, and that the Brits were only adopting a French invention; I think the jury’s still out. In any event, the love affair between the prince of Wales and Maria Fitzherbert popularized these objects and spawned a fad that lasted well into the 1830s — and even later, past Queen Victoria, who was known to have commissioned a number of these objects during her reign. There are even artists to this very day who are painting lover’s eyes. One is the great-great-grandson of the famous Philadelphia portraitist Thomas Sully; he’s sent me a picture of a miniature he’s working on. Rather than paint on elephant ivory, which of course wouldn't be legal nowadays, he paints on mastodon ivory. He also points out that he usually has them commissioned by faithful spouses, not lovers or mistresses."
