Tussie Mussies and The Language of Flowers

A couple of years ago, I found a Victorian “Tussie Mussie” at an antique store.  It was pretty, but obviously lacked the former embellishments that would have been originally in place, and I had always wanted one.  Adding to my satisfaction of the find, I paid a mere $2.00 for it!  I have always absolutely adored the romance attached to these little flower holders.   Here is the picture of the tussie mussie I found (with some tacky fake flowers).

I no longer have my tussie mussie because I threw it at our wedding during the bouquet toss, and my niece caught it, so of course, I told her to keep it.  Thinking back, I am glad I didn't "take someone's eye out", as I vaulted it through the air and into a crowd!

Tossing the bouquet
Returning to the purchase of the object of my desire, when I brought it up to the cashier at the ReSource, I said “I can’t believe I found a real tussie mussie!”

The girl behind the counter said, “I thought that was to measure ring sizes! ... What is a tussie mussie?

So, what the heck is a tussie mussie?

Just saying the word will conjure a smile, or at least, it does me!  The words together are a term used for small bouquets of herbs and/or flowers and have been used from ancient times into the Medieval era.  During the Victorian era, tussie mussies became somewhat of an obsession, which I will explain.

The term tussie mussie comes from the Queen Victoria reign between 1837–1901, when the small bouquets became a fashion accessory.

Apparently, the "Language of Flowers" as it became known (giving symbolic meaning to flowers) was not invented by the Victorians, but is believed to begun in ancient Asia or Greece and through the Middle ages, but flowers had a darker use - they were used to disguise the stench which emanated from women - as regular bathing was not a common practice. Bouquets of flowers were commonly placed in rooms or worn around the neck, in the hair or on the lapel.

huntingtonbotanical.org explains that it is believed that the phrase "tussie mussie" is an Old English "phrase meaning “tossed together quickly.” Other sources say it is a medieval term meaning “sweet posy.” The most frequent references I have found indicate that “tussie” refers to the Medieval or Old English word which means “knot of flowers”, and “mussie” refers to the damp moss wrapped around the stems to keep them moist."

"During medieval times, before deodorants and public sanitation systems, people carried fragrant nosegays to protect themselves from bad smells, which were present everywhere.

They also believed that bad smells are what caused disease, and conversely, that if they carried good smelling herbs, the flowers would ensure good health.

This evolved to a young man gathering little bouquets to give to his lady [when she went out] to protect her from disease. Eventually, meanings were given to each plant so that a message could be sent, since most people could not read or write."

On a more pleasant topic, the tussie mussie can be spelled as “tussy mussy”, and are also known as a nosegays.

What makes a tussie mussie different than a simple bouquet of flower is that each flower in the tussie mussie must have symbolic meaning, creating a very personal message and the combinations can obviously, be endless!

During the Victorian Era, actual “Tussie Dictionaries” were created/invented to explain the symbolic meaning of each sprig, often referred to as ‘the language of flowers’, to aid the demand for its knowledge.

Today, tussie mussies are experiencing a revival, particularly for weddings and funerals.  It is a thoughtful way to express one's feelings, particularly if the meaning of the flowers in the bouquet are written out, for a ceremony or when giving it away.

Tussie Mussie holders are also something that you can make.  When one considers all the scrapbook and sewing supplies  available today - utilizing online resources or shopping at a craft store - it would be relatively easy to make one of your own.

Below are some clever samples that I found online.  They are inspired, and I love the fact that each has it's own theme.  That is the beauty of making your own!  You can find literally thousands of examples if you conduct an online image search - very inspiring!

I found this wonderful A to Z list of the Victorian meanings of flowers online. Perhaps, now, you can make your beloved, a tussie mussie?

So, without further adieu,
